The rules given to the Boston Harbor Star Fleet were simple: find a skipper who has never raced a star before, race around prescribed courses, and have fun.
This year's class of talented rookie skippers included 210 national champion, Interclub fleet champion, Thistle, Hustler, 110 and PHRF sailors. Like last year, the 5-12 knot conditions were nearly ideal for the newbies to experience the starboat for the first time.
John Murphy and Fran Charles sped to the windward mark first in three of the four windward-leeward races, but it was Russell Robinson and Kurt Larson to take three of the four bullets on the day, to win the Skipper's Choice Gold Medal. Team Quincy, the combined skippering of Dave Hickey (races 1 and 2), and Bruce Wainwright (races 3 and 4) sailing with Peter Costa (the principal engineer of this annual event) won the silver. Murphy and Charles won the bronze.
Joe Duplin and other Boston Harbor Star Fleet alumnae and friends joined all the competitors, and organizers in the CPYC Pilot House afterwards for a daily recap, barbecque, beverages, and ballgames. A good time was had by all. And ALL of the no-longer-rookie skippers expressed interest and enthusiasm for sailing star boats again.
Thanks to Ron Rezac for organizing the event, and Joe Zambella, and a flurry of others on race committee.
