Todays race started in a 15-20 knot north-northeasterly breeze right off the airport runway pier. The course was a port triangle.
Braverman\Twombley were first off the starting line in the building breeze with Team Costa right on their tail. Zambella\Sokolich were not far behind, and split to the right, into the channel away from Costa, Braverman and PHRF imports Timmy May and John Goll.
All four boats were close coming into the windward mark. Zambella's move to the right paid off as he had a slight lead followed by Costa who tacked just inside of Braverman to gain inside overlap before the mark, and the newcomers about a boatlength behind.
The breeze picked up for the downwind leg. Costa and Braverman went high and surfed the waves passing Zambella who stayed low. Costa rounded the gybe mark first, but was passed by Braverman who stayed high on the second reach. Braverman, however, went a little too high, and Costa regained the lead by the end of the reach.
On the upwind leg, Braverman went left splitting tacks with Costa, while Zambella rounded the mark and continued right.
Zambella passed Braverman half way up the beat to finish second, but couldn't catch the speedy Team Costa who won the race.
The newcomers, May and Goll survived the strong breeze, and finished a close fourth in their first star race.
