We waited for about 90 minutes for the wind to fill, and decide what to do. We started when the wind finally decided on South at about 5 knots. The breeze shifted right at the start, and built to about 8-12 for the day, with the regular *harbor hurricane* for the ride back to the club.
We raced from Deer Island Shore, up to Sculpin Ledge, downwind to the anchorage buoy "C", upwind to Sculpin Ledge, and back to deer Island Shore. Danny did a great job of keeping us far away from the 20 Rhodes 19s who were racing their Eastern Regional Championship Regatta at CPYC.
First off the line was rookie Star Sailor Brian Savery with Ron Rezac who tacked onto port at the heavily favored pin. They went up the middle and lead most of the way up the beat. They were followed closely by Art Housman and Steve Braverman who sailed up the left side on a 20 degree rightie, but benefitted by sailing up the Long Island shore. Kurt Larson and Sergey Leonidov were in the hunt with Savery/Rezac most of the way up the beat, but saw the benefits Housman/Braverman gained at Long Island shore, and went clamming on the shore, came all the way back in a windless header, and were never seen again.
John Siljander and Bob McKie had a serious case of the slows at the start, and got flushed out the back. But they went to the right, pushed the speed buttons, caught the fleet on the last tack of the first beat up to Sculpin Ledge, and never looked back.
Housman/Braverman and Savery/Rezac battled hard for second, swapping gybes on the run, tacks up the beat, getting overlap around the Sculpin Ledge nun, and fighting every inch of the way downwind on the final run. But experience proved to be the factor as Housman edged Savery at the finish.
Savery from MIT, practicing for the Pine Trophy sailed strong in his first star race. He remarked about how easy these boats were to sail, and how they sailed like a big laser. I think we'll be seeing Savery more on the starting line. He's already a force to contend with on the water.
Thanks to Danny, Hatch, Dev, and Jim for accomodating our racing during another CPYC event.
