BOSTON HARBOR AT THE 2002 NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP

June 12, 2002 Report Filed by Steve Braverman:
two races today. cold. verrrrrry rainy. miserable. worse than most of the frostbiting days....

pretty windy. 5-15. tough starts. got off the line both times. course 2. more silly triangles but don't have much of a choice here.

first race got to the weather mark 9th or so.... clawed our way with inside overlap to 5th at the leeward mark and held that position the rest of the race. tooth and nail. got closer to the top but couldn't move up any places. boats close on our heels.... lots of shifts and lots of holes.... reynolds won. szabo fiumara/chambers bromby and us right behind.

2nd race. got to the weather mark 3rd. with andersen/richardson right on our heels. more reaches. got much closer to the reynolds bromby tacking duel but couldn't pass 'em. last leg concentrated on keeping karl and ben behind us. we were 3rd. they were 4th.

when your verrrrry cold wet and tired the last thing you want is a tacking duel. doug didn't see it that way ;-) 20 tacks last 1/4 of the leg....

got in about 3 and was greeted in the club with hot veggie and chicken soups. nice touch!!!! chiarella hosted a nice party at the club tonight.

one more race tomorrow or perhaps friday if thursday is as windless as weather.com says....

we're in third overall. reynolds wins unless bromby wins the last race and reynolds gets worse than 5th.... only if bromby tanks do we have a shot at 2nd. comfortably in 3rd.... ivey and mac have a shot at us but needs to finish 3rd or better in the last race....

jake & joe are in 7th. anderson/richardson are in 11th. corey & davis got hit again....

fun time. this crewing thing is hard work. boat is very fast uphill and down....
bedtime.... gonna sleep very well!!!!!

June 11, 2002, Report filed by Steve Braverman:

Three races down. Three to go? No wind and rain today. No races....

Tough racing so far. Have found ourselves in the right places at the right times. Have the boat going pretty well but that's not nearly the issue here as it is at home.

Crewing with doug schofield in my boat (new rig and all....). He's a pretty good sailor!!!! Learning a ton.

Practice race ended in nearly a drifter. Many boats dropped out. Found ourselves in about 10th and climbed our way to 3rd just by playing shifts and avoiding the holes.

The 1st race had a little breeze and I got an education on the mini... The 2nd race was light with the lefty filling for a one-sided racecourse.... The third race was even lighter with every puff being critical. The mark was so close to the shore we tacked 10 times the last 50 yards to the mark.... We and Luczinski each passed 10 boats at the time.... Too many triangles.... No wind today.

Hitting shifts patience and looking to the shore for the next puff is the name of the game. Speed and a little luck don't hurt either!

BH fleet and other local sailors are doing alright w/Anderson/Richardson and Siljander/Mckie in top 20. Doug & I along w/ Fiumara/Chambers are in top 10. Phypers and Davis Buckley w/ Corey Baker keep gettng hit.... Luczynski/Maher & Foxes are having fun and doing well. Former BH sailor Ken Allen and Jeff Shoreman are sailing too -- tied w/ Luczynski/Maher

In all a great time!!!!

Sunapee fleet is putting on great show so far. Dinners. Parties. Even went to the top of mt sunapee in chairlift for sunset dinner.... WOW!!!! good stuff!

Two races on tap for tomorrow....

g'night....
