The event was sailed in the waters of Broad Sound, between the Deer Island and Nahant. The weather on the first day provided cloudy skies and intermittent rain drizzle with temperatures hovering under 70 degrees. But the blessing was a steady wind in 3-10 knot range from Northeast. In the end of day, after two races, three boats were tied for the series' lead at 4 points each, Bainton/Rogers, Chittick/Chittick and MacDonald/Leonidov.

On day two the skies cleared up for a perfect cool sunny day in Boston. The wind forecast was for NW at 10 knots, turning W later in the day. With the tide coming in for most of the scheduled race most the competitors cut hard from the start into the left corner, to hide from the tide and to find that left shift. This is when the wind gods dealt their cards and shut off the NW breeze, only to be replaced twenty minutes later by the seabreeze filling from the right side of the course. The boats who sailed inshore on starboard tack continued getting lifted from there without a tack, all the way to the weather mark, which some of them approached reaching, still starboard tack. The boats that worked the right side of the course had to sail to the weather mark low enough to slow down and let some of the boats from the left side sneak in first at the mark. The next leg turned into a reaching port tack procession while the committee re-set the new weather mark at approximately 140 degree course change from the previous weather mark course. The third leg was a beat as well, across the tide in two shipping channels, towards the Brewster islands and then a run to the finish. The third race had a surprise winner, BH Star's race committee regular Dan Mullaine sailing on a borrowed boat with his son Jim. Bainton/Rogers and Chittick/Chittick were caught on the left side of the first beat and were engaged in a furious fight for 10th place, which would place the winner of the duel into the top three. Chittick/Chittick rounded the first mark after Bainton/Rogers but managed to overtake them in the remainder of the race for a 10 points gain which placed them into second overall. Mullaine/Mullaine took third overall on a tie with Bainton/Rogers. MacDonald/Leonidov held onto fourth place in this race to win the series with a good margin.

July 6, 2002 - Report by John Fox:
Winds were from the NW with shifts up to 50 degrees. Wind strength 8-14kts.
The day was mainly a battle between Gary MacDonald/Howard Davis and Steve Braverman/Ron Rezac for the series with the other boats hanging in there for the ride.
Plenty of place swapping throughout the fleet due to the shifts.
Scores for DNC are corrected to the number of boats that actually sailed in the series.
The only boats that changed places were Foxy and Siljander/McKee and Foxy dropped one place to tie with Siljander/McKee instead of Lavery/Carney

June 29, 2002 - Report by John Fox:
Finally some really beautiful weather! Race 4 & 5 were sailed in Broad Sound along with the PHRF fleet.
Stars were the largest of 6 classes with 9 boats on the line. Winds were about 5 kts from the East at the first start and built to about 9kts and shifted to SSE as the day went on.
Gary MacDonald and Howard Davis ruled the day with a 2 & 1. Ken Luczinski and Jason Maher proved that old boats are still fast by tying with Franny Charles and Corey Baker for the second for the day.

7444 fran charles & corey baker
7732 gary macdonald & howard davis
8052 steve braverman & ron rezac
7101 ted lavery & john carney

The race started in about 15-20 knots and ended in 25+.
The course was windward to winthrop shore, leeward to thompson island, and back to windward. braverman/rezac lead to the weather mark. good rides on the run.
Charles/Baker & Woods/Reuter caught Braverman/Rezac by the leeward mark.
3/4 the way up the 2nd beat Woods/Reuter passed and covered Charles/Baker to win the race.

The fleet headed in instead of having a second race.

Big flag day party at the club...beers, burgers and dogs.
Learned from wednesday's misery at sunapee, and wore the drysuit - warm & toasty today.

June 2, 2002 - No racing, Report by Steve Braverman:
Gary and Howard left the dock, and almost deathrolled, but got the boat under control, and quickly gybed....got around the pier, and tried to go upwind, but from the dock we couldn't see Gary and Howard, only their keel. They headed back in within minutes.

Franny and Corey went out, and did the same 'almost deathroll' thing.... they went past the nuns and reached out to long island in about a minute. long trip home -- came in with big grins on their faces about an hour later.

June 1, 2002, Report by John Fox:
Race 1 and Race 2:

First race was in wind about 15kts with gusts to about 18-20.

It blew very hard for the second race, maybe winds 20-25 with gusts clocked as high as 45 on Shepard's boat. Kenny, Siljander and I headed back before it started and only 4 boats finished it . The only breakage was Steve's Rig after the race. They went to let the main down and the bolt rope pealed out of the track and the sail completely filled like a spinnaker. The mast folded at the spreaders.

Beautiful weather. 75 degrees. clear skies. 5-10 knots of breeze.
Three 1/4 mile windward-leeward sprints. 3 Thistles and a Rhodes 19 joined us on the pin favored starting line. Very tight racing. Fun time.

Braverman/Reuter and Larson/Blodgett got lots of practicing in for this weekend's Arms-White regatta in Milford, CT. Hope to have more stars on the water next week.

There were more people on the new Race Committee Boat than on the racecourse. Rumor has it the new boat has a pretty stocked fridge! Thanks for the three races.
